Officially Spring

Waking up at 9:30 was beyond amazing this morning. It’s my first official day on “vacation” and I started things off with a short 2.25-mile run on the treadmill. My plans were to also get in a Jillian DVD, but with the weather being so nice out (58 degrees!), it just seemed like so much more fun to make a cup of coffee and sit outside while reading the newspaper.

One story actually made me laugh, which is pretty rare for a newspaper. Apparently there was a woman in Florida who was fed up wit her son’s ~1.5 GPA in school. She forced him to go onto a busy street and hold a sign that said, “Honk if I need an education.” Now, investigators are looking into whether her behavior could be held against her, I guess. She didn’t seem to care though because people honked, and she seems to have gotten her point across. Pretty random, but pretty funny.

Most of the other news was depressing, as usual. But if I don’t read the newspaper every single morning I feel oddly out of sorts. I think that’s the journalism student in me talking.

Now, television, newspapers and Web sites are being dominated by the tragedy in Japan and the potential war between the Allies and Libya. I don’t want to put a damper on anyone’s day, but I’ve been thinking about both issues a lot lately. I’ve decided to donate some money to the Red Cross to support Japan. Though it will probably only be around $20.00, I believe that everyone can do just a little bit to help the Japanese overcome this horrible tragedy. I’m praying for the safety of everyone in Japan right now.

Paul came over during the afternoon, and instead of going for a walk, which was what we originally planned to do, we played Scrabble in my backyard.

Scrabble fever!

Three games later, Paul had beaten me 2-1. Wah wah.

Though my backyard is usually pretty peaceful, it was very noisy during all three Scrabble games. I kept hearing garbage trucks, lots and lots of birds chirping, random noises and a wild cat meowing. This cat was pretty creepy. It stared at us for a while, and then crept away. It looked like it was homeless because of the crazy beard it had. Seriously this was a jungle cat. Of course, I didn’t get a picture of it, but I did sneak up on a bird.

The rest of my day was filled with eating! Lunch was beyond delicious, thanks to muenster cheese.

Lunch at home

I melted two slices of muenster cheese on an everything bagel thin and then had some red pepper and sun-dried tomatoes on the side.

For dinner, Paul and I used a Groupon for the Greek restaurant Psistaria five minutes from my house. We ordered the kalamari to begin with because we both love squid. I ended up getting the roasted red peppers filled with a spicy feta sauce and a bowl of egg lemon soup. Both were so yummy, and the spicy feta sauce had a delicious bite to it. Yum!

I’m so stuffed right now, I feel like I could burst! I think that means that I need to lay in bed and get some reading done, no?

Has spring arrived for you yet? Any fun plans for the week? What’s your favorite thing to order at Greek restaurants?

  1. Sounds like an awesome day! I know spring’s here because I’ve heard birdies chirping. It’s such a refreshing sound after winter! Plus, I can run outside without gloves – sweet!

  2. Oh girl I love me some big old greek salads. Or gnocchi with the gyro meat. Actually gnocchi with gyro meat wins.

I’m glad your Spring Break is going fabulously. Seriously sitting outside>Jillian.

I feel really odd if I don’t read the newspaper and listen to the news along with my blog reading in the morning. Seriously I get into a little tizzy.

  3. Yay for vacation/break days!! The first one is always one of the best because you can just savor every single minute and not have to worry about anything just yet ๐Ÿ™‚

You’re not donating “only” 20 dollars. You’re reaching out a hand to help someone on the other side of the world. If everyone did what you’re doing, there would be a whole lot of money to help rebuild!

I’m impressed that you played 3 games of scrabble. I hate scrabble. It takes way too long to get my turn. The ADD in me much prefers Boggle.

  11. Jenny says:

Lol what a funny story about that lady and her son. Only crap like that happens in my state ๐Ÿ˜ฆ And what beautiful pics! I can’t wait to use my sushi groupon! ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. awww, scrabble in the yard is so cute! I’d love to take advantage of Both: the beautiful weather AND my love of board games by doing something similar!

A few things…1. I adore Munster cheese! 2. News is so depressing but thank goodness for those silly human interest stories sprinkled in to make us smile! 3. Love starting a vacay day with a good work out (followed by relaxing with a cup of coffee)…sounds like you are a pro at this whole “vacay” thing already and you have only been doing it one day!!!! xx Cat

Spring is definitely here for me!! My sunglasses broke this weekend (I’d had them for 2 1/2 years) so I celebrated spring with a new pair!

Nothing too exciting going on this week though because my spring break was last week. This week it’s back to work.

  15. sundaynightsimmer says:

My spring break started this week. I just moved into an apartment a couple days ago and made my own blog. That cheese looks really good, but Ive never heard of it..what does it taste like?? I have only been to a couple of greek restaurants and usually order some kind of pita with hummus. One time I got greek pancakes haha. And regarding your question about “How do I know my pace and distance”…You can get a Nike Id wrist band that will track it all for you. You can also just go by time..thats what we do in college running. Instead of going for “6” miles, just go for 45 minutes on your watch

  16. I’d totally honk if I saw a kid holding that sign! I think it’s a good idea!!

Have a great week girl!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. My bf always kills me at scrabble! although he was an english major so thats my excuse ๐Ÿ™‚

Glad you’re enjoying your time off! Scrabble sounds a very intellectual way to pass the time, I think I’d be hopeless now so used to spellcheck ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Kace says:

I really need to read the newspaper more, or at least watch CNN a little bit each day.

And ugh I LOVE Greek food. Spanikopita, calamari, or chicken gyro’s with a side salad make me very very happy.

  20. I love what that mom made her son do! I think it’s a fabulous idea ๐Ÿ™‚ I love Greek salad, but I’ve never been to a Greek restaurant!

  21. movesnmunchies says:

greek food sounds awesome! ahaha thats a funny story you read!! ahh i cnt wait for official spring.. the weather is pretty good right now- hope it sticks!

  22. Katy says:

Yay for fun, relaxing vacations!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I donated to the Red Cross Japan fund before I left Africa. I always think about donating, but never get around to it when there is a tragedy, and I told myself that was ridiculous. I have the money right now, and people need it. So I just did it before I had the chance to forget. Haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

The weather here in Norfolk, Virginia is AMAZING in my opinion. It feels like God turned the air conditioning on! ๐Ÿ™‚ I know everyone is sick of the cold, but it feels amazing to this girl! ๐Ÿ™‚
